海外版都市伝説「バックルームズ」
ケイン・パーセル（Kane Pixels）による『The Backrooms (Found Footage)』は、インターネット・ミームから端を発した「リミナル・スペース（境界的な空間）」という概念を、 映像芸術の域へと押し上げた歴史的な傑作だ。本作が世界的な社会現象を巻き起こし、ホラーの新たなサブジャンルを確立した理由は、「慣れ親しんだ日常の異質化」という恐怖の核心を突いた演出にある。
まず、「ファウンド・フッテージ（発見されたビデオ映像）」という形式の使い方が極めて洗練されている。
90年代のホームビデオを思わせる粗い画質、手ブレ、そして独特のノイズ。
これらは単なるレトロな演出ではなく、観客に「これは現実に起きた出来事である」という強力な没入感を与える装置として機能している。
批評家的に見れば、本作はデジタル時代の都市伝説を、アナログな質感で再定義した点に大きな価値がある。
最大の特徴は、舞台となる「バックルーム」そのものの造形だ。
どこまでも続く黄色い壁紙、湿ったカーペットの匂いを感じさせる質感、
そして絶え間なく響く蛍光灯のハム音。これらは、学校やオフィスの廊下といった「本来は安心できるはずの場所」が持つ不気味さ――すなわちリミナル・スペースの恐怖を完璧に具現化している。
何もいないはずの場所に「何かがいる」予感。この「不在の恐怖」こそが、観客の想像力を無限に増幅させる。
さらに、物理法則を無視した空間のねじれや、正体不明のクリーチャーによる追走劇は、静かな不安を突如として心拍数の上がるパニックへと転換させる。
この緩急の付け方は、弱冠10代（公開当時）のクリエイターとは思えないほど老練だ。
多くの視聴者が「夢で見たことがある」と語るように、本作は人々の潜在意識に眠る共通の不安を掘り起こした。
単なるジャンプスケアに依存せず、「現実から脱落（noclip）し、永遠に終わらない無機質な迷宮に閉じ込められる」という実存的な恐怖を描き切ることを可能にしたのだ。
海外作品ではあるが、この恐怖を味わうのに言語の理解は不要であろう。
