10分緊張感が続く「カーブ」
アリ・アスターやデヴィッド・リンチを彷彿とさせる、ミニマリズム・ホラーの極致。ティム・イーガン監督による短編映画『Curve』は、わずか10分足らずの間に、観客の肺から空気を力ずくで搾り取るような、圧倒的な圧迫感を提示している。
本作がこれほどまでに高い評価を受け、多くの視聴者を戦慄させている理由は、恐怖の本質を「説明」ではなく「感覚」に完全に委ねた点にある。
まず特筆すべきは、「重力という名の抗えない死神」の描き方だ。
ホラー映画の多くは殺人鬼や怪異といった「動的な脅威」に依存するが、本作の敵は物理法則そのものである。
コンクリートの巨大な曲面という、無機質かつ幾何学的な空間。
そこでは、ほんの数センチの滑落が死に直結する。
多くの人が「自分の指先にまで力が入った」と語るように、この作品は視覚を通じて、観客の触覚と平衡感覚をダイレクトに攻撃してくる。
また、音響設計（サウンドデザイン）の巧妙さが、この絶望的な世界観を補完している。
吹き荒れる風の音、荒い呼吸。
そして何より、爪がコンクリートを削る不快な音。台詞を一切排除したことで、これらの「音」が沈黙以上に雄弁に、状況の残酷さを物語る。
下方の闇から聞こえる正体不明の音は、観客の想像力を刺激し、画面に映っていない「底」の深さを無限に広げてみせる。
さらに、本作が単なるシチュエーション・スリラーを超えて、一種の芸術的深みに到達しているのは、その「徹底した匿名性」ゆえである。
なぜ彼女はそこにいるのか、この構造物は何なのか。
一切の背景を削ぎ落としたことで、この物語は「人生における絶望」や「精神的な孤立」といった普遍的なメタファーへと昇華された。
視聴者は、泥沼から抜け出そうとあがく自身の人生を、あるいは社会の薄氷の上を歩くような不安を、あの滑りやすいカーブに投影せずにはいられないのだ。
『Curve』は、恐怖とは「得体の知れない何かが現れること」ではなく、「逃げ場のない明白な現実の中に、ただ置かれること」であると定義し直した。
観終わった後、平らな地面を歩けることに安堵を覚えるほど、私たちの身体感覚を揺さぶる一作である。
