ドキュメンタリー風ホラー「イス」
短編ホラー映画『椅子』は、日本のホラーが伝統的に得意とする「理不尽なルール」と「閉鎖的な空気感」を、現代的なシチュエーションの中に凝縮させた一作だ。本作が視聴者の背筋を凍らせ、高い評価を得ている理由は、「禁忌の侵犯」がもたらす予測不能な恐怖の連鎖にある。
本作の白眉は、「椅子をテーブルから下ろしてはいけない」という、極めてシンプルかつ不気味なルール設定だ。
この一見して滑稽にも思える制約が、物語が進むにつれて重苦しい呪縛へと変貌していく。
批評家的に分析すれば、これは観客の「なぜ？」という好奇心を刺激しつつ、その問いに対する答えを「最悪の形」で提示するという、ホラーの王道的手法を見事に踏襲している。
特に演出面で光るのは、「日常的な音」の変質である。
カップルの何気ない会話や、安宿の生活音の中に、突如として割り込む「椅子が動く音」や「何者かの気配」。
管理人が異常な剣幕で現れるシーンは、ルールを破ることへの恐怖を物理的な圧力として観客に叩きつける。
ここで、幽霊的な恐怖と「話の通じない人間」の恐怖が融合し、絶望感が一段階引き上げられる。
また、映像の質感も特筆すべきだ。
安っぽいはずの宿泊施設が、執拗なまでのガムテープ補修や、不自然な椅子の配置によって、異界との境界線のように見えてくる。
この「日常が少しずつ壊れていく感覚」が、視聴者の生理的な嫌悪感と不安を巧みに煽っている。
ラストシーンで見せる、救いのない崩壊は、「ルールを守らなかったことへの罰」という以上に、「逃れられないシステムに組み込まれてしまった」絶望を象徴している。
本作は観終わった後、自分の部屋にある何の変哲もない家具さえもが「意志」を持って自分を見ているのではないか、という疑念を抱かせる。
『椅子』は、ミニマルな設定を最大限に活用し、観客の日常に「拭い去れない違和感」を植え付けることに成功した、現代Jホラーの鋭利な小品と言えるだろう。
