ホラーのスタイル：SFモンスター編
SFクリーチャーホラーにおける恐怖は、人間の内面や社会構造からではなく、人類の理解圏の外部から到来する。サイコパス・ホラーが「人間が脅威となる物語」だとすれば、SFクリーチャーホラーは人間が無力化される物語である。
このジャンルにおける緊張は、「理解できない存在」によって生まれる。
クリーチャーはしばしば異星起源、未知の進化、生物工学の失敗などとして描かれるが、重要なのはその設定ではない。 恐怖の核心は、人間の理性・科学・倫理が通用しない対象が存在するという事実にある。
SFクリーチャーホラーでは、緊張は段階的に構築される。
まず存在は直接的に姿を現さない。痕跡、死体、破壊された環境、通信の断絶といった「結果」だけが提示される。 観客は因果を推測しようとするが、決定的な像を結べない。この認識の遅延が緊張を持続させる。
やがてクリーチャーは視認される。しかしその瞬間、緊張は緩和されない。 なぜなら多くの場合、姿が見えたことで「勝てない」「逃げられない」という事実が確定するからである。 SFクリーチャーホラーにおいて、可視化は安心ではなく、絶望の確定を意味する。
リドリースコットの「エイリアン」は、まさにこの法則を教科書通りに再現した作品といえる。 エイリアンの正体が明らかになればなるほど、人間たちは絶望な戦いに追い込まれるわけだ。
このジャンルで特筆すべきは、科学が恐怖を打ち消すどころか、しばしば恐怖を強化する点にある。
分析、分類、数値化といった行為は一見すると緊張を下げるように見えるが、結果として「制御不能」「想定外」「対処法なし」という結論に収束する。 ここでは、知ることが救いにならない。
緩和は、限定的かつ条件付きでしか許されない。 一体を倒す、隔離する、弱点を発見する――これらは一時的な解放を与えるが、物語はしばしば「個体ではない」「適応する」「進化する」という形でそれを否定する。 SFクリーチャーホラーにおける緩和は、常に人類側の希望が誤認であったこととして回収される。
総じてこのジャンルの恐怖は、人間中心主義の崩壊にある。 理性、科学、技術、勇気、連帯――それらが意味を失う瞬間を描くことで、物語は観客の緊張を最後まで解放しない。 SFクリーチャーホラーとは、「怪物が怖い物語」ではない。人間が、宇宙において取るに足らない存在であると知る物語である。

ホラー界の第一人者、東野一心は作風が前期、中期、後期と大きく作風が変わってきた。 前期は大衆紙を中心とした自然ホラー物、 中期は彼自身のホラーの本質を具現化する作品を描いた。 しかし後期になると作風がばらばらで乱作の傾向があるとされる。
事実、ＳＦホラーを扱った「解歪響体」は、東野のホラーとしては非常に評価が低い。 一説には、人気ホラー作家である増渕珠代などが一心に師事してからは 弟子が書いた作品も一心のものとして出版しているのではないか、との声も出ている。
