ホラーのスタイル：自然編
自然脅威ホラーにおいて、人間を脅かすものは悪意でも意思でもない。脅威は自然そのものであり、動物、気象現象、地殻変動といった、人間の外部に存在する圧倒的な力である。 このジャンルの恐怖は、「襲われること」よりも、世界が人間を考慮していないという事実から生まれる。
このタイプのホラーでは、緊張は不可避性として立ち上がる。 動物は理由なく襲い、嵐や竜巻は選別を行わない。
そこに善悪の区別はなく、交渉も通用しない。
観客が期待する「なぜ」「どうすれば止められるか」という問いは、自然の前では意味を持たない。この問いの不成立が、緊張を持続させる。
サイコパスやオカルトが「理解しようとする行為」自体を罠に変えるのに対し、自然脅威ホラーでは、理解は可能であるにもかかわらず、対処が不可能または不十分である点が恐怖を強化する。
動物の習性、気象のメカニズム、災害の予測――知識は存在する。
しかし知っていることが、必ずしも生存を保証しない。
このジャンルにおける緊張は、拡散する。
脅威は特定の個人を狙わず、空間全体を支配する。
逃げ場は限定され、時間とともに安全圏は縮小していく。 観客は「次はどこが安全か」ではなく、「もはや安全な場所は存在するのか」という問いに追い込まれる。
緩和は、しばしば「一時的な沈静」として現れる。
嵐が弱まる、動物が姿を消す、警報が解除される。しかしそれは勝利ではない。
自然は敗北しないからである。脅威は去ったのではなく、通過しただけであり、再び現れる可能性を常に残す。
この点で、自然脅威ホラーの緩和は最も不安定である。
ホラーの先駆者である東野一心は、「小説自然」などいわゆる月刊誌へ掲載される短編では、好んで自然が脅威となるホラーを書いた。
これについては後日、自分の名前を最大限に売るための戦略であったとあかしている。
東野は、熊騒動が日本中に湧き起れば「熊１００頭を飼う村」を、 大地震や大津波が起きれば「津波高度測定技師」を、 といった具合に時事ホラーを掲載。結果的に東野の作家としての知名度は大きく拡大することとなった。
