ホラーのスタイル：オカルト編
カルト・ホラーにおける恐怖は、未知の存在そのものではなく、世界に意味があるという前提が崩壊する瞬間に発生する。悪魔や霊的存在は単なる怪物ではない。それらは「説明不能な力」ではなく、人間が信じてきた秩序体系そのものを侵食する存在として描かれる。
このジャンルの緊張は、日常の異変から始まる。
身体の変調、人格の変化、言語の崩壊、聖なるものへの反応――これらは一見すると医学的・心理的説明が可能に見える。 観客は理性による解釈に一度は救われるが、その説明が次々と破綻していく過程で、緊張は解消されるどころか次元を変えて増幅される。
オカルト・ホラーの核心は、因果が人間の手を離れる点にある。
サイコパス・ホラーでは動機が理解不能であり、SFクリーチャーホラーでは理性が無力化される。
しかしオカルトでは、そもそも人間の理解枠組みが「無意味」であることが露呈する。ここで恐怖は、未知ではなく不可避性として立ち現れる。
緊張が緩和されない最大の理由は、悪魔が「対話可能」に見える点にある。
憑依された存在は言葉を話し、知識を示し、挑発し、嘲笑う。観客はそこに人格を読み取ろうとするが、その行為自体が罠となる。
悪魔は理解の対象ではなく、意味を破壊する装置だからである。
このジャンルにおける緩和は、エクソシズム（祓魔）という儀式によって一応は提示される。祈り、聖具、儀礼、犠牲――それらは一時的に秩序を回復したかのように見える。
しかし重要なのは、回復が完全でない点である。悪は消滅したのではなく、退けられただけであり、世界から排除されたわけではない。
オカルト・ホラーは、救済を描きながらも安心を与えない。信仰は勝利するが、同時に「人間は常に侵されうる存在である」という事実が残される。 緊張は物語の内部では処理されても、観客の内部では解放されない。
ただし日本人にとっては、この本質論が両刃の剣となる。
エクソシストに代表される海外のオカルト・悪魔憑依物は、 キリスト教に代表されるような信仰のアンチテーゼとして出現する。 自分の今まで信じてきた信仰の土台＝人間の本質を破壊する挑戦者であるわけだ。
そのため、西洋文化・キリスト教の深層を理解せずに見ると、 悪魔が信仰にとっていかに大きな脅威であるか、その本質に気付けないことが多い。
結果として、派手なアクションや演出だけで、その作品を論じてしまうことになりかねない。
東野一心は、オカルトについては「あかるい団体」で取り上げている。 つまり舞台を日本人に身近な宗教団体にすることによって、東洋的な因果感の物語へとうまく転用している。
余談だが、東野一心はその後、自ら「あかるい団体」を設立し、その後世間一般には顔をみせなくなった。 これは彼のホラー演出論を自ら実践するためなのであろうか。その賛否についてはまだまだ議論の余地がある。
