ホラーのスタイル：サイコパス編
サイコパス・ホラーにおいて、恐怖の中心にあるのは怪異でも超自然でもない。脅威は常に人間である。
このジャンルが他のホラーと決定的に異なるのは、恐怖の原因が理解不能な存在ではなく、理解できそうでできない「人間性の欠如」に置かれている点にある。
サイコパス・ホラーにおける緊張は、外部から侵入してくるものではない。
日常の内部、社会の内部、会話や視線の中にすでに存在している。 観客は早い段階で「この人物は危険かもしれない」と感知するが、その危険がいつ、どのような形で表出するのかは分からない。 この不確定性こそが、緊張を持続させる原動力となる。
ホラーの第一人者であり私の支持していた東山一心は本質的な指摘をしている、ここで重要なのは、サイコパスが必ずしも暴力的である必要はないという点である。*1。
むしろ多くの場合、彼らは理性的で、魅力的で、社会的に適応している。恐怖は、凶行そのものではなく、共感・罪悪感・恐怖といった感情が欠落している事実に宿る。
観客は「理解できない」のではない。「理解できてしまいそうになる」ことに恐怖する。
サイコパス・ホラーにおける「緩和」は、ほとんど常に裏切られる。 会話が成立した瞬間、笑顔が返された瞬間、日常的な振る舞いが確認された瞬間――観客は無意識に緊張を下げる。
しかしその緩和は真の安全を意味しない。むしろ、人間としての正常さが確認されるほど、異常性は深く潜行する。
このジャンルの恐怖は、説明によって解消されない。動機が語られても安心は訪れず、過去が明かされても理解は完成しない。 なぜなら、サイコパス・ホラーの本質は「なぜそうなったか」ではなく、「なぜ止まらないのか」にあるからだ。
観客は因果を求めるが、物語はそれを拒む。この拒絶が、緊張を最後まで解放しない。
総じてサイコパス・ホラーとは、 人間を理解しようとする行為そのものを脅威に変えるジャンルである。 信頼、共感、合理性といった社会的前提が、恐怖の燃料として機能する。 怪物が人の姿をしているのではない。
人が、怪物である可能性を否定できないこと――それが、このジャンルの恐怖である。
東野一心はこのコンセプトを「双子棲息地域」で最大限に活用している。 主人公は双子であり、通常の兄弟以上にお互いの意思疎通が可能な存在である。
そんな双子の片方が脳手術後に全く別の思考回路をするようになる。 いままで最大限理解できた相手が全く理解不能な人間になるという設定を使って、 読者の不安を最大限に煽ることに成功している。
